Comments from the Poker Runs America publication regarding the Formula 400 FX:
Formula Boats has mastered the art of performance. Historically, the company has built some of the best-performing boats on the market. Mercury Racing engines are an essential part of its high-performance offshore boating lineup. When Mercury Racing recently announced a new 520 hp engine designed to deliver 520 horsepower economically and reliably, the temptation to try it on a luxury performance cruiser was simply irresistible. Here is our opinion on the Formula 400 FX, details on the new Mercury Racing 520, and the results of their pairing.
For more than 50 years, the Porter family has shaped Formula/Thunderbird Products into what is recognized as one of the best boats in the world. A few years ago, the company launched the FX line of Super Sports, further enhancing the features of an already impressive lineup. Step aboard a Formula FX and you are immediately won over by the attention to design, the effort invested, and the obvious quality.
During our test of the Formula 400 FX, I quickly noticed equipment such as premium Livorsi gauges, Axius joystick controls, a Kohler 7K generator, a deck shower with hot and cold water, a Krups coffee maker, a cedar-lined locker, and a fully equipped 6'2" galley. And that's not all!
For example, there is a concealed windlass with 150 feet of chain, a chain counter and stainless anchor; five high-capacity marine batteries with an 80-amp charger (one battery per engine, one for the generator, and two for service equipment); blue LED cockpit and cabin lighting; and blue LED underwater lights. Solid cherry or ash wood tables (with dedicated storage for the tables, cushions, dock lines, and fenders); remote-controlled halogen spotlight; 12 polished stainless steel cup holders; rubberized laminate flooring in the engine compartment; telephone jacks; and vinyl flooring on the swim platform. Honestly, how many mid-size cruisers do you know that offer features like these?
And then there is the famous Formula hull. It features a grid structure made from a one-piece fiberglass liner bonded to the hull with Plexus adhesive. Thanks to this strength, Formula offers a 10-year structural warranty along with a 5-year limited warranty on components and the drivetrain.
As you can imagine, Formula is constantly searching for quality engines capable of delivering the power and performance expected from its boats. The new 520 hp Mercury Racing engines with Bravo Three drives and Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) appear to be the ideal propulsion system for the 400 FX.
Mercury Racing is by far the largest manufacturer of offshore racing engines. Performance has always been their priority and, over the years, we have seen significant increases in both horsepower and reliability. When speed is everything, fuel consumption is the least of your concerns, but for non-competition applications, rising fuel prices created growing demand for an economical V8 delivering strong torque and power. To meet this demand, Mercury Racing, drawing on its expertise and experience, developed the new 520. This naturally aspirated engine offers boaters a cost-effective power solution combining performance with exceptional value.
The 520 is equipped with the DTS system. Mercury Racing optimized the 520’s power and torque by increasing cylinder bore size, bringing displacement to 8.6 liters (521 cubic inches). This increased displacement, combined with Mercury Racing cylinder heads, multi-point fuel injection, and electronic throttle control, delivers nearly 100 additional horsepower over the 430 hp MAG HO. Even better: all this power is achieved using 87-octane fuel.
The CNC-machined engine block integrates numerous Mercury Racing-designed components, including a balanced crankshaft, forged and shot-peened I-beam connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons. The Mercury Racing aluminum cylinder heads feature optimized valve angles for improved airflow. The increased displacement, combined with optimized airflow, results in exceptional mid-range power and constant pulling strength throughout the RPM range.
The new 520 uses a closed-cooling system for more consistent temperature distribution, optimal operation, and saltwater use. It features a 65-amp charging system, providing sufficient power for numerous marine electronics. It also includes the same PCM 09 microprocessor used in the 565 and QC4v engine families. In addition to DTS controls, the PCM independently optimizes fuel injection and ignition for each cylinder.
