There’s something about the islands of French Polynesia that makes you slow down. Maybe it’s the stillness of the lagoons, the scent of vanilla on the breeze, or the way the stars appear to burn a little brighter out here. Whatever it is, it’s best experienced by sea.
This week, our clients are sailing through the Society Islands aboard Zen Quest, a catamaran designed for comfort, adventure, and a kind of barefoot luxury that fits this destination perfectly. Their itinerary takes them from Huahine to Bora Bora—through quiet motus and into anchorages that feel like postcards come to life.
They began in Huahine, often called one of Tahiti’s best-kept secrets. With thick jungle, sleepy villages, and water so clear it barely seems real, Huahine feels untouched. They snorkeled just off Hana Iti beach and spent the night anchored in tranquil turquoise waters, a soft beginning to a week that would build in beauty.
Next came Taha’a, the Vanilla Island. The crew arranged a visit to a local plantation, and the boat was scented sweetly all day from the bunches of pods they brought back. The coral garden here is famous, and drifting through it is like flying underwater—an explosion of life, color and movement. The evening ended with cocktails on the sun deck as Bora Bora’s silhouette appeared on the horizon, backlit by a golden sunset.
Mid-week, they reached Raiatea, the spiritual heart of the Polynesian islands. They visited the sacred “Marae of Taputapuatea” and the ancestral homeland of the Maori culture. Later that day, they explored the only navigable river in French Polynesia by tender—where wild jungle edges meet still water and everything feels ancient.
The final leg of the trip brought them to Bora Bora—the most photographed, most dreamed-about island in the Pacific. But coming in by private yacht is different. You approach slowly, in silence, watching Mt. Otemanu rise from the sea like a temple. Romantics from around the world celebrate Bora Bora as of one of the most beautiful islands in the world. They swam with rays at the Lagoonarium, visited the local spice, flower and fruit markets of Vaitape, and finished the week with one last drift snorkel through the coral gardens off Motu Piti Aau.
There’s no rush here. No crowds. No rigid itinerary. Just the sea, the wind, and the pure joy of discovery.
Zen Quest is perfectly suited to this type of travel—light in footprint, but rich in experience. The crew is warm and intuitive. The water toys (kites, SUPs, wings) are ready when adventure calls. And the itinerary? It unfolds organically, one island at a time.
Whether you’re a romantic, an explorer, or someone just ready to unplug—French Polynesia is worth your time. And Zen Quest is one unforgettable way to see it.
